Protection: Legal Issues

One of the key responsibilities for any father, homeschooling family or not, is to provide for the protection of his family. One not often thought of when considering protection is legal protection. As homeschooling families, we are frequently under suspicion and/or accusation by people not familiar with homeschooling and the legal right to do so.

The Homeschool Legal Defense Association (HSLDA) is an organization that is well worth the investment as a part of your homeschool budget.  Providing legal analysis, representation and consultation for many years, HSLDA is a critical component to the homeschool movement.

HSLDA provides a state by state analysis of homeschooling laws and regulations, keeps tabs on any governmental issues related to homeschooling and provides legal counsel in situations where appropriate to member families.

Even for families where mom or dad is an attorney, the amount of time it takes to keep up on all of the issues related to homeschooling can be burdensome. Having HSLDA watch for those issues and keep you informed – as well as provide legal support when you need it – is well worth it.

HFN strongly recommends that homeschool families join HSLDA.

Public Education Records

This article in US News and World Report reviews some of the concerns that arise in the record keeping of students in public education.  As more and more information goes digital, issues like this will continue to grow.

Depending on your state’s recordkeeping regulations and laws, the level of concern for homeschooling families may vary.

Interesting Article on College Majors

I came across an interesting article on the web this afternoon: College Majors that Are Useless.

The data is what it is, but can be interpreted in a lot of ways. So, don’t immediately believe the headline. I don’t agree with this article’s title or conclusion that these degrees are worthless, but do see where they raise a significant point regarding the applicability of a college degree.

As homeschool fathers, it is critical that we understand trends such as these as we help guide our children into the post-high school stage of life.  This type of information is important so that there are fewer illusions about what will be available after college graduation.

With that in mind, most important is that as these decisions are being made, listening to the Holy Spirit for direction must be the first step.

More on this topic in the future.

Hello Homeschooling Dad

Welcome to the Homeschool Father’s Network blog.  This is just the start of great things to come in support and networking for homeschool dads.  There are a lot of resources out there for homeschool moms, and justifiably so since in many cases the mom is doing most of the schooling.

So, where does dad fit in?  We hope to help you answer that question as you seek to educate your children.  In the coming weeks and months, we hope to expand to a full website with resources, events and support for dads.

It’s not easy being a dad, especially when you homeshool. So many questions come up and it can be overwhelming trying to keep it all together.  Don’t worry, we’re here with you.

So, hang on for the ride, it should be fun.
